Role Purpose

The Department Head – Warehousing and Transportation is responsible for leading the strategic and operational management of warehousing and logistics functions across the organization’s pharmaceutical network. This role ensures the safe, compliant, cost-effective, and timely movement and storage of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products across plants, depots, 3PLs, and markets. The leader plays a pivotal role in shaping the distribution network strategy, transportation planning, and inventory visibility across the supply chain, while driving digital transformation, regulatory readiness, and service level performance.

Job Responsibility and key Decisions

Strategic Network Infrastructure Planning

Define and implement the longterm warehousing and transportation strategy, including network optimization, new facility setups, and costtoserve improvements.

Make strategic decisions on warehouse footprint, automation, hubandspoke models, and regional distribution centers.

Warehouse Operations Management

Ensure compliance with GMPGDP standards in all warehouse operations.

Oversee material receiving, putaway, storage, picking, packing, dispatch, and reverse logistics across sites.

Maintain high inventory accuracy and minimal product loss or damage.

Transportation Operations Control

Manage all inbound and outbound logistics across domestic and international channels.

Ensure timely dispatch, route optimization, load consolidation, and tracking of shipments.

Monitor temperature excursions, shipment deviations, and take corrective actions.

Compliance, Audits Risk Management

Own inspection readiness for warehouse and transportation operations FDA, WHO, CDSCO, etc..

Lead incident management, CAPA implementation, and SOP alignment across sites.

Implement risk mitigation plans for strikes, fuel price volatility, weather disruptions, and political events.

Technology Automation

Drive adoption of WMSTMS tools, IoTbased tracking, GPStemperature loggers, and robotic process automation RPA.

Ensure integration of systems with ERP for realtime visibility and control.

People Performance Management

Lead a team of warehouse managers, logistics planners, transport coordinators, and vendor relationship managers.

Define KPIs and drive performance e.g., OTIF, logistics cost, warehouse productivity, and safety incidents.

Financial Management

Manage the departments logistics budget, cost optimization projects, and contract negotiations with 3PLs and carriers.

Lead efforts in reducing freight costs, demurrage detention charges, and warehousing overhead.

Key Decisions Handled

Final approval on warehouse site selection, expansions, or consolidations.

Selection and contracting of 3PL partners and transportation providers.

Escalation and resolution of compliance gaps or audit findings in warehouselogistics operations.

Strategic decisions around alternate routes, storage arrangements, or riskmitigation logistics models.

Signoff on logistics automation and digital transformation initiatives.
